Ted Laliotis - State Assembly
21st Assembly District

Biography

Ted Laliotis, a 35 year resident of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, is recognized as an active and involved leader in business, local government, and the community.

All his adult life Ted has believed in the principles of good education, hard work, community involvement, and family. Those principles have served him well.

Ted received a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley in 1964, and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from San Jose State University in 1966. Over the years, his hard work and genuine commitment have earned him the respect of the High Tech community as a recognized leader.

He worked at IBM San Jose as an engineer/scientist 1964-1967, as a scientist and engineering manager at Fairchild R&D 1967-1974, as Vice President for Advanced Technology at a small start-up company (ASI) 1974-1977, and as an R&D scientist and Engineering Executive at HP Laboratories for the last 18 years (1977-1995).

Ted has been a leader among his professional peers as well. His career-long professional activities in the Computer Society of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has won him many distinction awards for contributions to the profession. He has taught graduate computer architechture courses at San Jose State and Santa Clara University (1967-75).

In 1985, drawn by his belief in community service and good government, Ted was appointed and served as a Planning Commissioner of the City of Los Altos. In 1987, driven by concerns of rapidly growing spending and General Plan revision issues, Ted ran for a seat on the City Council and was easily elected. He was re-elected without opposition in 1991 and served as Mayor for 1991-92. As he left the City Council in November 1995, after serving two terms, the City of Los Altos is in very sound financial position, there is a well respected set of Residential Design Guidelines in place, and the City has an approved Housing Element by the State.

Ted has considerable expertise in transportation and housing issues. In Santa Clara County, he served on the Transportation Commission for six years, including Commission vice-chair, and for three years on the board of the Congestion Management Agency (CMA). Finally, he was instrumental in the separation of Transit from the Board of Supervisors and merging with the CMA to form the Transportation Agency as an independent entity. He also served for three years on the Housing Action Coalition committee, whose prime objective is to advocate for affordable housing projects. Ted believes that integration of transportation and land use is an effective way to address the region's needs for transit and housing along transportation corridors.

Ted was a charter member of the Public Sector of Joint Venture Silicon Valley and has served on many committees. He is a member of the Los Altos and San Jose Chambers of Commerce.

Ted is 56 years old. He and his wife Vangie raised two sons, Ari who is an MD, married to Kristy, is currently doing his residency at Stanford, and Tony who is an Environmental Engineer working on ground water decontamination in Silicon Valley. Ted loves sports. He coached youth soccer (AYSO) for 12 years while his sons were growing up. He enjoys golfing, skiing, soccer, water skiing, fishing, and he likes spending time in the mountains.
